Education System in China

In China, the education system is divided into three main branches: basic education, higher education, and adult education. According to Chinese law, compulsory education requires all children to receive at least nine years of formal schooling, which includes primary education and lower secondary education.

Basic Education

Basic education in China includes:

  • Preschool Education (Kindergarten):
Children start attending kindergarten at around the age of 3 and continue until about 6 years old, for a total of approximately 3 years. This level is not compulsory, and both public and private kindergartens are available.
  • Primary Education:
Begins at age 6 and lasts for 6 years. It is part of the compulsory education system.
  • Lower Secondary Education (Junior Secondary):
Lasts for 3 years, typically for students aged 12–15. Completion of this level fulfills the 9 years of compulsory education mandated by the government.
  • Upper Secondary Education (Senior Secondary):
Lasts for another 3 years, typically for students aged 15–18. This level is not compulsory. Students can choose to continue in either the general academic track or the vocational education track

Vocational Education

Vocational education generally lasts 2 to 4 years and focuses on providing students with technical knowledge and practical skills in fields such as production, operations, and industrial work.
Each academic year is divided into two semesters.

Higher Education

Higher education in China comprises several levels and durations:

  • Associate Degree: 2–3 years
  • Bachelor’s Degree: 4–5 years (Some disciplines such as medicine, engineering, and science may take up to 6 years)
  • Master’s Degree: Approximately 2–3 years
  • Doctoral Degree: Approximately 3–4 years

Higher education in China is highly diverse, offering a wide range of academic disciplines and flexible study formats. There are programs that offer diploma-based and non-diploma-based education. Some institutions also provide integrated programs that combine associate, bachelor’s, and master’s level studies.

Adult Education

Adult education in China is a non-formal education system that supplements basic and higher education. It is divided into three levels:

  • Primary-Level Adult Education:
Focuses on providing basic education and literacy for workers in rural and remote areas.
  • Intermediate-Level Adult Education:
Emphasizes vocational training, including fields such as TV production, radio broadcasting, and clerical work.
  • Advanced-Level Adult Education:
Offers professional and technical training at a higher level through colleges or universities to enhance specialized knowledge and skills.
